Hydro in Africa: Navigating a Continent of Untapped Potential

With thousands of miles of waterways and enormous untapped potential, the African continent is poised for an explosion of hydropower growth. Navigating the challenges of development in this diverse environment can be well worth the large return, especially with small hydro.

Hydropower has a great relationship with natural resources and geographical conditions. Brazil has always been considered a country rich in water. It is estimated that about 12% of the world's surface water resources are located in the country. So Brazil produce electricity over 60% by hydropower. African has abundant water resource as well and they take advantage of that to build tons of hydropower plants to generate electricity. For some African countries, due to their poverty and slow electricity development, electricity produced by hydro power can be self-sufficient and it is economical for them to use hydropower since it is renewable. So some Afican countries have high hydropower proportion in generating electricity.
